Profile of Fr Chiedza Chimhanda
Chiedza was born on 3 June 1972 at Andrew Fleming (now Parirenyatwa) Hospital, Harare. He then grew up in Dzivarasekwa, attending Gillingham primary school until he was 11 years old, when the family moved to Mutoko. He completed his primary education at Nyadire primary school.
He and his three brothers were brought up in a Catholic family, where his father, now 75 years old, was a teacher until retirement. His mother passed away in 1989.
In 1986 he started secondary school at St Ignatius College, Chishawasha, where he completed is O and then A levels in1991.
Chiedza entered the Jesuit novitiate in Lusaka in 1992, making his first vows in 1994. From there he went on to Arrupe College in Harare where he completed a BA degree in Philosophy and Humanities in1998.
Then a scholastic aged 27, he spent three months as Acting Catholic Chaplain to the University of Zimbabwe, standing in while the Chaplain was on leave. From this he moved to St George’s College for regency, teaching there until 2000.
After this, Chiedza enrolled at the University of Cape Town, first for a BA in Law, Politics and History, then a MA in History, completing in 2004.
While waiting to start theology studies, he worked for six months with the Jesuit Refugee Service in South Africa, then moved to Hekima College in Nairobi for Theology studies.
In 2007 Fr Chimhanda was ordained priest at Our Lady of the Wayside, Mount Pleasant, along with Fr Gibson Munyoro, then took up the post of assistant to the novice master in Lusaka for two years.
Next came Tertianship in Ireland, followed by return to Zimbabwe and appointment as Acting Superior of St Paul’s Mission Musami for six months at the end of 2010.
He made his final vows with Fr Anesu Manyere at Arrupe College in 2011. The same year he was appointed Delegate for Formation, and also moved to St George’s College, where he is the current Rector, and will probably remain until he takes up the post of Provincial in mid 2014.
